 가사를 번역해볼까 하다가 좀 난감해서 그만뒀다. 어조와 느낌이 중간에 바뀌는 곡이다. 'Can you hear the drums, Fernando'에서는 오래된 친구에게 친근하게 건네는 말처럼 들리다가도, 'I would, my friend, Fernando'에서는 마치 '난 그럴것이네, 친구여.' 식의 비장한 어조로 변한다. 존대말을 언어의 차이가 아니라 어조의 차이로 표현하는 언어다보니 이런 부분은 표현하기 어려운 구석이 있다.

 번역은 관뒀지만, 가사를 읽으면서 새로 알게된 몇가지에 대해서 대충 정리해보았다.

 '별이 많은' 정도로 쓰는 형용사로 알고있다. 헌데 어디선가는 [스테리]라고 발음했던 거로 기억하는데, 아바에서 둘은 [스타리]라고 하더라. Star+y 라는 구조로 봐서는 그게 더 단어의 원래 뜻을 존중해주는 발음법이겠지? 어쩌면 아바의 발음법이 좀 구식이고, 요새는 다들 눈에 보이는 대로 [스테리]라고 읽는 지도 모르겠다. 단어의 형태가 점차 의미와 멀어지는 느낌으로.

3. Rio Grande

 멕시코와 미국을 가르는 강의 이름이라고 한다. 난 당연히 리오 그란데라고 읽을 줄 알았는데, 아바는 리오 그랜드라고 발음하더라. 그럼 모 카페에서 Tall, Grande 식으로 표현해놓은 사이즈도 그랜드라고 읽으면 되는 건가? 위키피디아에서는 그란데와 그랜드 둘 다 맞는 발음이라고 하는데, 아마 위키페디아와 위키피디아의 차이와 같은 느낌인것 같기도 하고. 외국인들도 한국어 복수표준어에 대해서 비슷하게 혼란스러워하겠지.
